Honey Extraction 2010

I removed and extracted honey the first weekend of July. I came out of winter with only 3 hives that produced honey and I got 105 lbs from these three hives. All the honey was light in color and had a very sweet taste and a good honey aroma. After extracting I had to clean up my extractor so I carried it outside and let the ladies do the cleanup. I also carried the bottling bucket outside for cleanup and I finally set the supers outsode for the bees to cleanup the frames.

On March 30th, 2006 I became a Beekeeper !

Welcome to my site about beekeeping and meadmaking. I have been brewing beers and making meads for several years now but I am completely new to the beekeeping World and looking to learn a lot in the future. I began reading about bees near the end of 2005 and attended the Mecklenburg Beekeepers Association Bee School in the beginning of 2006. Then on March 30th I got a full hive and a nuc from Mecklenburg Beekeeper, Bill Boyd. They are Italians and both are very gentle hives to work. They did swarm not long after getting them set up. Still trying to recover from that. This site will be updated and added to on a regular basis so check back often. There are a number of links on the left so check them out.

4/16/06 - (Pic below) First sting ! Was looking for the queen. Removed 1 frame and set on ground. As I was checking other frames knocked the frame on the ground over - uh oh - they got real ticked off ! I had just removed the veil trying to find the queen. Two lessons learned - Do not remove veil - Definitely do know kick over a frame

I am an ugly old skutter but a sting near the eye makes me a VERY ugly old skutter ! ! !
