Welcome to my Beekeeping/Meadmaking Website

On March 30th, 2006 I became a Beekeeper !

Welcome to my site about beekeeping and meadmaking. I have been brewing beers and making meads for several years now but I am completely new to the beekeeping World and looking to learn a lot in the future. I began reading about bees near the end of 2005 and attended the Mecklenburg Beekeepers Association Bee School in the beginning of 2006. Then on March 30th I got a full hive and a nuc from Mecklenburg Beekeeper, Bill Boyd. They are Italians and both are very gentle hives to work. They did swarm not long after getting them set up. Still trying to recover from that. This site will be updated and added to on a regular basis so check back often. There are a number of links on the left so check them out.

2008 Mead Day was a great time for everyone that attended. Click here for some pics

My Brand New First Ever Bee Yard ! ! !

Due to a tree falling on my house in July of 2007, I had to relocate so I set up a new bee yard behind the house I am now in.

I put a tarp down and spread pine needles out to help keep weeds and grass from growing in front of the hives. Then I setup the yard. The Nuke and the Hive on the left do not have bees in them at this time. Maybe later on I will add more to the yard.

My first swarm removal !

A swarm got under my Dad's workbench in his carport. He wanted them gone so I went down and pulled out the bench and found the bees going underneath. Turned it over and this is the findings ! Jimmy Odom came and helped get them in a hive and I let him have the swarm.

I am an ugly old skutter but a sting near the eye makes me a VERY ugly old skutter ! ! !

4/16/06 - First sting ! Was looking for the queen. Removed 1 frame and set on ground. As I was checking other frames knocked the frame on the ground over - uh oh - they got real ticked off ! I had just removed the veil trying to find the queen. Two lessons learned - Do not remove veil - Definitely do know kick over a frame !
